The father of 8-year-old, second-grader Mamadou, who lives in a family of six children, delivers meat to the butchers from the slaughterhouse. His mother collects the discarded water bags on the street, then washes them and measures them by the kilo, and sells them again to refill them. They share an incredibly narrow yard with the father's family and a huge sheep that is not theirs. In the wretched room, the parents sleep on a bed made of boards, the children only have room on the floor on a mat. The small room has electricity and a fan freshens the air. Mamadou is a smart little boy, he already has a notebook for being in second grade, which is a big thing in Mali because it is only allowed for the best. His grades’ average is 7/10. It's not every day that the family gets food. Mamadou likes math and plays soccer in the street in his spare time.
